The Guest House   Translation of Rumi by Coleman Banks

This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be ready for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

The Law of Attraction in very basic terms states that positive thoughts bring positive results while negative thoughts bring negative results or similar things are attracted to one another. It is basically a discussion of the energy that you put out into the world. And that discussion of energy is a WHOLE other discussion!

What I completely believe is that each person that you have contact with every single day is a truth bearer and if you are really lucky, observant and open you have an opportunity to learn and grow with each encounter. It is like you keep getting homework until you finally really understand it.

The best example I can give is if you keep having relationships with the same “type” of person and it fails in unhealthy heartbreak every time. Hopefully eventually you understand that as much as you are attracted to that person, these are the reasons that it does not work out and you no longer want that in your life. Once you let go of that desire you open room up for something else. And honestly, it is not always just another relationship. It might also be an opportunity for work or travel or a deeper relationship with self.
